Causes of TBI
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can result from any external insult to the head. The following graph depicts the relative percentages of TBI's caused by various types of events. (see http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/factsheets/tbi.htm)
- Falls are the leading cause of TBI, with the greatest risk for injury among individuals aged 0-4 years and aged 75+ years.
- Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are the greatest cause of TBI-related hospitalizations; TBIs due to MVAs are most prevalent in individuals aged 15-19 years.
